Your documents deserve a clear answer

Where your information stays.

This page describes how the current website and local workspace handle information. Cloud backup and cloud AI are not active services.

Document reading happens on your device

The local workspace reads supported documents in your browser. It does not upload their contents to a document-processing server. The website may download the software and language files needed to run these tools.

Working records, extracted text, and confirmed details are saved in this browser's local storage. Retained original files are saved in its IndexedDB storage. These working copies are not encrypted by Bankruptcy Buddy inside the browser.

The browser is not an account or a backup

The local workspace does not require a Bankruptcy Buddy account. Its data belongs to this browser and this site address. Another browser or device will not automatically show the same work.

Someone with access to your unlocked browser profile may be able to open the workspace. Clearing site data, using private browsing, or browser storage cleanup can remove local work. Keep your own original documents and make backups of work you need.

Downloaded backups can be password protected

The backup tool encrypts the exported workspace and any included original files using your password before the file is downloaded. It uses AES-256-GCM with a password-derived key. You can choose a workspace-only backup without originals. The password is not stored or sent to us, and we cannot recover it.

This encryption protects the backup file, not the live working copies in the browser. Older JSON backups, raw recovery files, summary downloads, printed pages, and information copied to the clipboard are not password protected. Store and share those carefully.

Local AI is optional

The answer library works without a local AI model. If you enable local AI, Buddy connects to Ollama on the same computer. Questions, relevant answer-library excerpts, recent conversation, and reviewed workspace context can be sent to that local service.

The integration accepts a local device address and excludes models identified as cloud models. It does not read arbitrary files elsewhere on your device. You can switch back to the answer library. Installing or downloading a model is a separate interaction with its provider.

Visiting the website still makes ordinary web requests

The site is hosted on Vercel. Serving a page involves ordinary network information such as an IP address, the requested address, browser information, and request time. Local document processing does not make browsing anonymous.

The current application does not include advertising trackers. Following an external link, such as a court website or a founder's LinkedIn profile, takes you to a separate service with its own data practices.

You control the copies you make

Use the workspace's Data & backups page to create or restore a backup and to clear the local workspace. Clearing local work does not delete a backup, summary, or original you previously saved outside the browser.

Before using a shared computer, consider who can access the browser profile and any downloaded files. Any future cloud or account feature will need its own clear explanation before it is enabled.
