Privacy & data

On your device does not mean backed up.

A clear explanation of browser storage, downloaded backups, and what we do not store in the cloud.

Your browser holds the working copy

The current workspace stores working records and extracted text in this browser. Retained original files are held in the browser's IndexedDB storage. Document reading does not send the contents to a processing server.

These live working copies are not encrypted by Bankruptcy Buddy. Someone with access to an unlocked browser profile may be able to open them. Local processing does not make a shared computer private.

Clearing browser data can clear your work

The same website in another browser or on another device will not automatically contain your workspace. Private browsing, clearing site data, or browser storage cleanup can remove the local copy.

Keep the original files somewhere you control. Make a backup before changing devices or clearing browser data.

A backup is a separate file you keep

The Data & backups tool can create a password-protected backup. It encrypts the exported workspace and any included originals before downloading the file. A backup can include up to 50 MB of originals, or just the workspace records and extracted text.

Keep the password separately and securely. We do not store it and cannot recover it. Summary downloads, printed pages, clipboard text, older JSON backups, and raw recovery files are not password protected.

Cloud backup is not live

There is no active cloud backup service or automatic cross-device sync in the current product. A downloaded backup stays wherever you choose to save it.

We will explain any future cloud service and its data handling before asking you to use it. For the current details, read our privacy page.
